Metabolic testing measures the rate at which your body burns calories and uses oxygen during rest or during different activities. There are different tests that one may opt to try to help them gather information on their body’s metabolic function. Based on test results, Weight Loss and Training Programs can be tailored to help each individual meet their respective goals.

Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) – this test will estimate the number of calories an individual burns at rest. Using indirect calorimetry, one can measure the volume of oxygen consumed compared to carbon dioxide expired while at rest. Using these numbers in a formula, we can calculate the number of calories you burn when your body is at rest.

You should avoid eating or exercising for 3-4 hours prior to the test, and you will be instructed to sit and rest for short period of time just before the testing begins. The test will require you to lie in a relaxed position while breathing into a mouthpiece for 10-20 minutes. Based on the results of your Resting Metabolic Rate and your estimated daily activity, we can estimate the total number of calories you burn every day without exercise.

In addition, these numbers can determine how your body burns fuel during exercise. Using this information can help us design a diet and exercise plan that will be most effective at managing an individual’s weight loss.

VO2 Max and Lactate Threshold – VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilize during exercise. Lactate threshold is known as the maximal effort or exercise intensity that an individual can maintain for an extended period of time with little or no increase in lactate in the blood.

The test can be performed on a treadmill or a bike while breathing into a mouthpiece, and will gradually increase in incline and speed over measured interval stages. This test will measure the amount of carbon dioxide you exhale during the different stages of exercise. Ultimately, the findings can estimate how efficiently you use oxygen and burn calories at each exercise intensity.

Using this information, we can design an Exercise / Training Program to help you improve your performance with running, cycling or sporting events. We can also identify which target heart rate zones you should exercise within to burn more fat, and ultimately re-educate the body to burn more fat even at rest.
